A Successful Assignment

Moving to a new country for an assignment can be a challenging, yet enriching experience. Below you will find a list of the things that we consider the most important to consider before relocating, based on our 20 years of operations.  Hopefully these points, practical tips and advice will help you prepare and set the best conditions for a successful relocation.

Cultural Knowledge

Our advice is to learn about the new culture, the values and the society. Study the language. If possible, visit the country in advance. Reflect on your identity and understand your own values and how you are perceived by others. Be curious in the new culture and when meeting people who are different. Ask questions and listen carefully to the answers.

Manage the expectations

Is this assignment a good match for you and your family? Are your significant other on board and what will he or she do? Do you have a backup plan if the assignment doesn’t work out?

Plan for education

Think ahead when it comes to schools for your children. Are you staying, moving back or moving somewhere new after this? Learn a bit about the school system, some countries have a more developed queuing system than others.

Housing – what is important?

Think about what’s important for you when it comes to housing. Would you like to be near nature, work or the city? Do you have hobbies that you want to continue with in your new environment? Keep in mind that this is a temporary accommodation for you. Maybe you don’t need to find your dream home here. Maybe good enough is perfect!

Ask for help

Study the services provided for you. Do you need something else? Ask for it. Apart from the must have services we always recommend intercultural competence trainings. Write down all the thoughts you have so that you can ask your relocation consultant.

Open-mindedness

Keep an open mind. Be ready to adapt to different situations and don’t be afraid to try new things. Different is good!

Learn from others

Talk to others that has relocated, colleagues, friends and people in your network. Ask for their best advice and the does and don’ts.

Patience

Patience, patience, patience!
